In the framework of the project “Sustainability of Services for Key Populations in EECA region”, a pilot program was launched in Moldova to train peer consultants from among people in prisons.
As a result of a rigorous selection process conducted based on a specially developed methodology, six consultants were chosen from six penitentiary institutions. The participants underwent comprehensive training covering topics such as the basics of counseling, risky behavior, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, hepatitis, drug dependence, and general health issues.
As a result of this initiative, two qualified consultants have already begun providing counseling services in prisons for their peers. Supervision and mentoring sessions have also been organized for peer consultants to support their skill development and help them find solutions in complex cases.
Moldova’s experience is a vivid example of utilizing the potential of people in prisons to provide low-threshold services available 24/7. This contributes to expanding access to healthcare services in prisons and allows incarcerated individuals to become meaningful participants in the service provision process.
