Promoting health rights in prisons of EECA countries

Project Goal: To strengthen the role of the prison community in policy- and decision-making in the field of ensuring the right to health in prisons in the EECA region.

Key Results 2023:

  • In the framework of community mobilization activities inception meetings have been conducted with community representatives from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Georgia, Tadjikistan, Uzbekistan;
  • Initiative groups of people with living experience in prisons have been created in 5 countries;
  • Experience exchange visit of Ukrainian officials to Moldova was held to study the organization of harm reduction and rehabilitation service provision;
  • Road Map “Access To HIV, TB, HCV Services in Prisons Without Discrimination. Community-Led Monitoring” has been developed and presented to regional and international stakeholders and civil society representatives. The Road Map is the first guiding document for conducting CLM in prisons of EECA region and includes general principles for CLM in penitentiary institutions and differences between CLM in prisons and civil sector, data to be collected and mechanisms of collection, logical matrix to define the modality of CLM implementation in a particular country, recommended normative and infrastructural requirements for data collection and usage, suggestions for institualization of CLM data;
  • Board meeting was held in Tbilisi, Georgia, December 14-15 to assess progress made in 2023 and define priorities for 2024.
